QUARTERLY BUSINESS MEETING Minutes

December 01, 2009

 

 

CALL TO ORDER

 

  The NCLEWA quarterly business meeting was held at The SBI Crime Lab in Raleigh.  The meeting convened at 11:15 a.m. and the invocation was delivered by the President, Kelly Oaks.

READING OF MINUTES

 

President Oaks made a motion to except the minutes without reading them since they were posted on the website and members received an electronic copy prior to the meeting. Sergeant Sam Hersey seconded the motion and all was in favor of excepting the minutes without being read.           

 

TREASURER’S REPORT

 

There was no new business to report at this time, as is the balance stands at $5,465.59. Captain Patricia Driggers  notified the President that she would be writing checks to our Forgotten Residences soon and paying Don Smith for maintaining our web site.

       

MEMBERSHIP REPORT By Kelly Oaks

 

There were no new memberships to report.  

 

CHAPLAIN’S REPORT By Marissa Davis

 

Two cards were sent to Chatham County Sheriff's Office in memory of an officer that was killed and another one that was injured. A card was sent to Winston Salem Police Department in memory of Sgt. Hudson.  

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

v  NC Training & Standards Commission- The NCLEWA’s designated representative, Sam Hersey, gave a report on Commission Meetings. Hersey said that there will be training on Domestic Violence and Investigating Human Trafficking. 2011 Mandated Training will be on the following courses: Firearms Juvenile Minority Sensitivity Training; Communication; Career Survival ; Domestic Violence (including training about the LGBT communities).

 

v  LEAP- The NCLEWA President is the designated representative at the LEAP meetings.  There have not been any new meetings scheduled as of this date.

v  FORGOTTEN RESIDENTS-  President Oaks receives news letters from the   forgotten Residents Facilities with their updates.  Lorraine Galloway (NCJA) agreed to try to visit resident Ruth Brown at J. Iverson Facility in Burke County.  Teresa Gurley (Wake Forest Police Department) agreed to visit the Murdoch Development Center in Butner. Patricia Driggers (Jacksonville Police Department) agreed to try to visit the Caswell Center and Marissa Davis (Goldsboro Police Department) agreed to try to visit the O’Berry Center.

v  Marisa Davis and Teresa Gurley purchased gifts and hand delivered these gifts to the O'Berry Center (Emily) and Murdoch Development Center.  The remaining sponsored individuals were given money for Christmas.

 

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: 

 

          2010 Conference planning:

 

Charlotte was voted to be the top choice for the 2010 Conference.  The Training Recommendations that were requested are listed below: Deadly Force Training and Critical incident stress de-briefing; Verbal Judo; Leadership Training; Promotional Boards and Assessment Centers.

 

          The date for the 2010 Conference will be September 15-18 in

          Charlotte at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department. A local                 

          Hotel will be chosen shortly and registration will follow at a later date.

 

          Recommendations for Guest Speakers were Kristi Hyman

         (NC Attorney General Office) or Robin Pendergraft (Director of NC State                Bureau of Investigation).

 

          A Conference Committee was proposed to assist with the details of       

         the 2010 Conference. Latisha Allen; Merica Zabitosky; Kelly Oaks and   

         Lorraine Synder volunteered to be on the committee. These  

         committee members will look at facilities for training and hotels and

         other Conference details. If you want to be part of this Committee

         please contact Kelly Oaks.

 

NEW BUSINESS

 

v    Promotions and Achievements: Kellie Guthrie was promoted from Sergeant to Lieutenant of Morehead City Police Department.

 

v    Lieutenant Bernette Morris volunteered to audit the Associations Financial  books with Captain Patricia Driggers before the next Conference.

 

v    Latisha Allen said that Association Shirts and Merchandise are available: Polo shirts are ($18.00); long Sleeve T-shirts ($10.00) and Nylon Bags are ($10.00). Please contact either Latisha Allen (lmallen@ncdoi.net) or Kelly Oaks (koaks@ncdoj.gov) for more information or to place an order.

 

v    The next meeting is to be held again in Garner on(Tuesday)  February 2, 2010 at 12:00 pm at the SBI Crime Lab in the Conference Room.  Everyone bring a bag lunch and a desert to share.

 

 

With there being no other business, Latisha Allen made the motion to adjourn the meeting and both Sam Hersey and Merica Zabitosky  seconded the motion.  The motion carried and the meeting was adjourned around 12:45 p.m.
