COMMITTEE REPORTS:
- Merchandise report – There was no merchandise report.
- IAWP- The 45th Annual conference of the International Association of Women Police (www.iawp.org) will be in Denver, Colorado, September 23-27, 2007; Darwin, Australia in 2008; Seattle, Washington in 2009; 2010 location has tentatively been scheduled for Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 2011, the IAWP conference will be held in Lexington, Kentucky.
- NC Training & Standards Commission- There was no report available. The NCLEWA’s designated representative, Cindy Isenhour, has been unable to attend meetings. The President mailed a letter to Cindy to ascertain if she will be available to attend future meetings. As of this date, the President has not received a response from Cindy regarding her inquiry. The Commission meets quarterly and the President may appoint an NCLEWA member to attend the meetings on behalf of the organization. If the current representative is replaced, the President will notify the Commission regarding the personnel change. Lorraine Galloway stated that she is interested in attending the meetings and Teresa Fountain expressed a desire to serve as an alternate representative.
- LEAP- The NCLEWA President is the designated representative at the LEAP meetings. The next meeting is tomorrow and, due to training requirements, the President is in Georgia and will be unable to attend the meeting. In the absence of the President, another member may be delegated to attend the meeting on behalf of the NCLEWA. Latisha Allen stated that she would attempt to rearrange her schedule to allow her to attend the LEAP meeting.
- FORGOTEN RESIDENTS- There was no report.
OLD BUSINESS
- Design of a pamphlet was proposed in an effort in increase awareness of the NCLEWA. Ideas for a new logo proposal will be solicited for incorporation into the pamphlet.
- There was discussion of getting post office box in Greensboro that would enable the NCLEWA to have a “permanent address”, rather than the address changing with each newly elected treasurer. (It was noted that the association was founded in Greensboro.) There was a suggestion to have a couple of retirees volunteer to periodically check the post office box. There was no official action regarding this issue.
- 2007 Conference- the NC Justice Academy at Edneyville has forty (40) rooms available for conference attendees. Each room has two double beds per room and all of the rooms have been reserved for the NCLEWA conference.
The conference fee MAY comprise the costs of most of the meals for the attendees. The fee will, hopefully, include the costs of:
- Breakfast on Thursday and Friday
- Lunch on Thursday and Friday
- Continental breakfast on Saturday (business meeting)
- Banquet on Saturday evening
Lorraine Galloway will check with the NCJA cafeteria manager to determine the costs for each meal. She will report her findings at the next meeting and the conference costs will be finalized at that time. There were several suggestions for the conference speaker. They included the Mayor of Asheville and the NC Lieutenant Governor, Beverly Perdue.
NEW BUSINESS
At the last meeting, it was decided that all training classes will be sponsored by the NC Justice Academy. The NCLEWA 51st Annual NCLEWA Training Conference will provide the following training topics:
- Steve Johnson(former lead firearm instructor for the NC Justice Academy) has volunteered to teach, “Firearms for Females/ Combat Shooting.”
- There will be a block of instruction regarding, “Officers’ Benefits Packages”.
- Ernest Cuthberson, nationally recognized gang expert, will teach a four-hour block of instruction on “Gang Activity Updates”.
- Linda Guedalia and/or Michelle Courtney will teach a section on “Wellness and/or Team Building.”
The attendees were instructed to consider a theme for this year’s conference (that might include firearms, mental/financial/emotional well-being).
OTHER BUSINESS
Lorraine Galloway will attend a ten-day advanced Spanish training course in Mexico.
The next meeting scheduled meeting of the NCLEWA is Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at 11:30 a.m. The meeting will be held at the Golden Corral, located near the Wendover exit in Greensboro.
With there being no other business, Teresa Fountain made the motion to adjourn the meeting and Odessa Long seconded the motion. The motion carried and the meeting was adjourned at 2:15 p.m.
